Lazlo's Corner
I'm so glad I sent out the e-mail Wednesday to see how everyone was doing in the aftermath of the (to many of us) crushing election results. It was nice to talk with so many of you about what we are all going through. As at least one person put it, tragedy brings us together.
I agree, we are not alone. Many of us are some combination of scared, frustrated, distraught, angry, or depressed. We are all processing and working through our emotions in different ways (hopefully all safe ways, if you are in crisis please call or text 988). It is okay to not be okay.
There were suggestions that BlowUpRadio.com could do one or more minority radio shows spotlighting Women, People Of Color, and LGBTQ communities. I love this idea, but as a Cis White Male, I think it would be irresponsible for me to host any of those shows. So if anyone is from those communities, or knows someone who is, that is interested in doing a radio show like that, please let me know. Note that specialty shows on BlowUpRadio.com do not have to stick to playing only New Jersey artists.
Some people also liked the idea of doing a benefit timed to the inauguration, but no one seemed to have a good organization to suggest. It is hard to say who will be affected first/worst, with Immigrants, Women, and LGBTQ likely to be affected instantly, as well as Climate Change. If anyone does have an organization to suggest, please let me know, because if we're going to try to time this to January 20th, we don't have much time to put this together. But we also don't need to rush, as we'll have 4 years to put together many benefits to try to do something positive.
One thing I thought of is maybe to bring back the Rock Against Hate compilations, for which we previously put out four volumes benefitting various organizations like Planned Parenthood, Kids In Need Of Defense, and The Trevor Project (https://rockagainsthate.org). Maybe we put out a new volume every few months and each one could be for a different charity. I'd love to be able to work with local charities, if there are good ones, where the money will help people directly, rather than some of the big ones where sometimes the money just goes towards internal operations. So again, if people have good ideas, let's discuss.
We can't change the outcome of the election, or that over 28% of the U.S. population over the age of 18 voted for the guy (just under 27% voted for Her), but we can choose not to curl up in a ball for the next four years and try to do what we can.
So let's all make a difference in whatever ways we can!
Apologies if this was more rambling then usual, but I'm just typing from my gut with no filter this week.
