Lazlo's Corner

The second annual North To Shore Festival was announced this week, with a plethora of shows coming to Asbury Park, Atlantic City, and Newark

From https://northtoshore.com -
"North2Shore is a three-city, three-weekend festival celebrating all the talent, diversity, and creativity this great state has to offer. North2Shore will bring together 50+ venues for an over-the-top showcase of Jersey-wide excellence, aligned with Governor Phil Murphy and First Lady Tammy Murphy’s vision for a celebration worthy of the Garden State’s legacy in the arts and innovation."

Don't get me wrong, this is cool, and I am glad to see New Jersey really pushing live original music...

but...

One thing that this festival is light on, are local New Jersey acts. Almost all the shows are touring artists that would probably be coming through the area even if there wasn't a festival. How exactly is that, "celebrating all the talent, diversity, and creativity this great state has to offer"?

It seems like this would be a great opportunity to spotlight all the amazing music right here in NJ that people can see in bars and clubs, but may not be aware of.

Having local original acts as opening acts for bigger names, and having local music showcases as part of the festival would be a great opportunity to support the local acts, and local original music venues, that are in New Jersey year round.

Speaking of music venues, I understand that this festival is trying to make a name for itself by focusing on three specific cities in different regions of New Jersey, but that also seems to me to be a missed opportunity. Instead of doing one week each per city, do one week each per region (North, Central, Southern), and give the opportunity to showcase other cities with music venues (Jersey City, Morristown, New Brunswick/Highland Park, Cape May, Trenton... etc.)

If I wasn't so busy with my family situation I might even have considered counter programming a festival to coincide with North To Shore, focusing on local original artists and venues that regularly have local original artists. I sure wouldn't mind if someone else took the idea and ran with it.
