Lazlo's Corner

So let's talk about Spotify.

It seems like just a month or so ago I was talking to people on Twitter (@blowUpRadio) about Spotify, and I was saying that if you like an artist's music enough to stream it all the time, you should buy it so that the artist makes some actual money from it, because Spotify is crappy about paying artists a fair rate.

Then this Joe Rogan anti-vax lunacy happened and now (as of when I am typing this) Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, and Nils Lofgren, have pulled their music from Spotify, and people are cancelling their Spotify accounts.

While I never had a paid Spotify account, and rarely used Spotify, I too deleted my account in solidarity.

Some say Spotify is a necessary evil, but let's be honest, there are plenty of other places people can stream music (including BlowUpRadio.com's internet station). Spotify may currently be one of the most popular, but it is not a monopoly (Bandcamp, Apple Music, Youtube, Pandora, etc.).

That is not to say everyone should feel pressured to jump ship from Spotify either. Yes, the more people that leave Spotify helps to make a bigger message against hosting misinformation, but I also understand that not every artist wants to be an activist, nor does every artist believe that hosting that misinformation is a major issue.

To each their own.

BlowUpRadio.com will no longer post links to any Spotify pages. I'm not going to go back and scrub any that may have been posted on the site in the past, but going forward you will not see links to that site.

Honestly, I have always preferred posting links to artists' Bandcamp pages, so that people were sent to a page where they could both hear and purchase an artist's music. Speaking of which, I believe this coming Friday is a Bandcamp Friday where 100% of sales go directly to the artist.
