Lazlo's Corner

I've been reading Gene Wilder's memoir, "Kiss Me Like A Stranger", which is quite an entertaining read, but that is not why I bring it up this week.

In it Mr. Wilder talks about how when "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory" came out in 1971 it bombed at the box office, and he had to hope his next film was going to be a hit to keep his career going. His next film, "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask", ended up being a big hit for him.

And it struck me, this is one of the problems with people trying to determine the success of any art form via the success of the initial release. Sure, "Everything..." was more successful 50 years ago, but just 10 years later that film was largely forgotten, where as 50 years later "Willy Wonka" is a beloved classic that is still on TV all the time.

Much like many painters, whose artwork only becomes popular after their death, any artform is a long game. So if you are a musician and you album doesn't immediately connect with an audience, that doesn't mean the album isn't good, nor does it mean that the album may never find an audience. Conversely, if you make something that is very popular upon release, that doesn't mean it will stand the test of time.

My point is to just try to create what you feel is good music.
