Lazlo's Corner

How are you doing?

It's a simple question we ask people every day, and we are conditioned to reply to it, often without thinking, with some variation of "OK" or "Fine", even if it isn't true.

We don't want to burden others with our problems, & we presume others do not want to hear them... which I'm sure is true for some people who are less empathetic.

And if we do feel comfortable enough to say a few things we are dealing with, we usually end it with some form of apology for venting to the person.

These things are ingrained into most of us, but they are not really healthy for us.

If I ask someone how they are doing, or more likely in an e-mail say, "hope you are doing well", please feel free to write back and tell me if you're not doing well. I may not be able to help your situation, but sometimes even just talking helps. And it doesn't have to be me, find a close friend to confide in The worst thing one can do is let things build up inside and not talk to someone. If you are more comfortable, write it down to get it out.

And if you prefer to talk to someone who is trained to help, and is a stranger (some people are less comfortable confiding in people they know, lest they think of them differently), there is Caring Contact, part of the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. You don't have to be thinking about suicide to need someone to talk to.
