Lazlo's Corner

We are crossing the one year anniversary of the pandemic truly changing our lives.

As I write this on Sunday March 14th I think back to one year ago when March 14th, 2020 was the final live show BlowUpRadio.com did at Espresso Joe's. A show I was uncertain about doing, but most of the artists involved wanted to do the show, and the venue did as well. I was glad the show was lightly attended, and the next day apologized in this very column for the show going ahead when I should have cancelled it.

This past year has been weird, depressing, frustrating, anxiety-riddled... ok, let's just say it has been full of a myriad of emotions, many of them not positive. But I don't want to dwell on the negative here. It would be easy to, but I want to shine a light on how, as terrible this past year has been, I feel very lucky.

First off, I have been lucky enough to have a day job I can do from home, which has not only allowed me to stay quarantined, only going out when I absoutely have to, it has also allowed me to be here to help my wife when her spondylitis is bad and my mother in law, who lives with my wife and I.

It also gave me the time to not only catch up on music I had bought pre-pandemic but never had time to listen to because of all the new music I prioritize to listen to first, but I also caught up on hundreds of DVDs I had picked up over the years and never had time to watch (don't worry there are still hundreds of things in my streaming queues that I will one day get around to watching... maybe?)

But the biggest thing on the BlowUpRadio.com front, was after sitting around for a few weeks depressed and shell shocked (probably like so many of you), I started figuring out ways to do more with the station to keep me occupied.

On March 25th I did the first of 122 interviews that I did last year. Between March 25th and June 12th I was doing interviews 7 days a week, and from June 15th to July 24th I was still doing interviews 5 days a week. Looking back I am not sure how I did that, but I am sure it helped keep me sane in the early days of this pandemic, so thank you to everyone who was a guest, and continues to be since I started on July 29th doing interviews once a week on Wednesday nights.

About a month later, on April 23rd, I started moving the Guitar Pull's we used to do once a month at Espresso Joe's, into a virtual setting using Skype for 3 musicians to share songs & stories round-robin style with me, and broadcasting the audio live every Thursday. We did 32 shows this way last year, and it has been some of the most fun I have had during the pandemic. We continue to do them virtually every Thursday, though I do hope one day to go back to doing them live somewhere when it is safe (sadly, Espresso Joe's is no more so a new venue will need to found when it is time).

So as we all continue to deal with the pandemic, it is easy to dwell on all the awful aspects of it, and I am not trying to minimize those... I think about the negative every day and some days it really pulls me into a dark space... but try to take a moment to think about positive ways things have changed in the last year. I was surprised to realize how many I personally had. Maybe you will too.
