Lazlo's Corner
As you know I host one show a week that does not spotlight NJ music, Lazlo's Den Presents New Music.
You may also know that I try whenever possible to avoid playing radio edits of songs. Being an internet radio station means not being FCC regulated and I very much enjoy the freedom that gives me.
When I am sent a radio edit, I try to see if I can get the album version, because I prefer to play the song the way the artist intended it.
But this week when I was sent the 4 minute radio edit of the new Dream Syndicate song, "The Regulator", I was stunned. I listened to it and it's a good song, so I sought out the full album version... which is 20 minutes long.
They (and I'm sure it wasn't the band, but the label) cut 4/5s of the song out. Imagine any song you love being cut by 4/5s. For most songs that would truncate them to under a minute.
It is amazing what labels will do to get a song on the air. And yes, from a business perspective I get it, but from an artistic perspective... I was going to do an analogy here, but let's just be blunt, from an artistic perspective it is just horrifying.
I know most commercial radio stations will not play a 20 minute song because they will lose some listeners. I am lucky being internet radio, and not doing this to make money, I will play whatever I like, and if I lose listeners... well I don't want to lose listeners, but hopefully I gain some too for being willing to play a cool longer song.
So this week's Lazlo's Den Presents New Music will begin at 6:30pm so I can play all 20 minutes of "The Regulator", and not have it reduce the amount of new music I can play by that time.
