Lazlo’s Corner
If you are a regular reader of this column, you know what I think of reviews, and why I stopped doing them.
That said, I want to take a moment to thank Tony Donato for putting together a tribute album to the most unlikely of artists.
Why do I want to thank him?
Because it gave me a new appreciation for this artist's music, even if I still don't care for the musician herself.
The album is Cut Pieces: A Tribute To Yoko Ono (http://www.mainmanrecords.com/products/cut-pieces-a-tribute-to-yoko-ono)
Like many, I have complex feeling about Yoko. She has done some good and bad things, in my opinion. But those feelings never factored into why I disliked her music. I disliked it because I didn't care for her voice, and therefore never gave her music a second thought.
"Cut Pieces" made me realize that, like those who cast off Bob Dylan's music because of his nasally voice but appreciate covers of his songs, that Yoko's music is actually good (though nowhere near as good as Dylan's)...in the hands of other singers.
I still have mixed feelings about her as a person, and get irritated hearing her singing, but the artists on this compilation made me realize that Yoko has written some decent songs, made better by their talent.
Thank you to those musicians, and to Tony.
