Lazlo’s Corner

I was listening to My Chemical Romance’s new greatest hits collection and it reminded me of something that I feel is important with music. Always give a band a fair chance, even if you’ve heard them before and did not care for them.

Back before My Chemical Romance was signed to a label and a household name, I used to see them playing VFW halls all the time. In those early days they still had quite the following, but I must admit that I did not much care for their music.

Several years later, after “three cheers for sweet revenge” made them famous, I saw them playing Warped Tour to tens of thousands of people. I commented that day that MCR may be this generation’s Bon Jovi. I still didn’t much care for their music, but there had been growth from their early days, and I got why they were so popular.

When “the black parade” came out, I gave them another chance, and had to admit that I really liked the song “teenagers” a lot.

But even I was surprised a few years later when “danger days” came out and I thought the album was pretty damn brilliant.

Listening to their greatest hits collection (called, “may death never stop you”), I am hearing all phases of their career. Some of it I still love, some of it I still don’t enjoy, but every time a new album came out I gave them another chance. I always tried to go in without a preconceived notion of what I was about to hear. If I had not, I might never have discovered their last album which I still listen to often.

Sure by going in with an open mind you’re going to realize that some bands never change (*cough* *cough* Creed *cough* *cough* Nickelback), but even they could surprise me one day. Bands grow, bands change, often times bands get better.

Always have an open mind. Always give new music a chance.
