Lazlo’s Corner

In the BlowUpRadio.com Guitar Pull airing this weekend, the topic of why I left commercial radio came up, and I told a story regarding the program director of the station I worked part time for and the band Five For Fighting (though not the band’s fault in any way) was the final straw that made me leave to have the freedom I do with BlowUpRadio.com.

Amusingly enough, the very funny Cartoon Network series, Regular Show, had a new episode this week that (in a humorous and slightly, but only slightly, overdone way), summed up the state of commercial radio today. Computers control the playlists, and you rarely hear a human say something that isn’t fully scripted and planned out. Most DJ’s today are puppets, not by choice, but because that is what the industry has become.

BlowUpRadio.com will never be like that. I won’t let it. I handpick all the songs I play, and the other people who host shows on the webcast pick their own songs. I don’t tell them what to play or what to say. Yes, are regular broadcast could use more voiceover between songs, and I am working on that, but even when it is just a lot of music playing with no talking, you can be sure a machine didn’t decide what songs are being played (though yes, some smartass can point out that a machine is playing the music).

I miss the days when DJs really did control the airwaves...but that died on commercial radio when I was very young. I hear some college radio stations are even fully programed now, and even they cannot play what they want to play. It sickens me.

Funny how a cartoon got me all riled up again about the state of radio.
