New Jersey’s own THOMAS MARTIN has returned with his long awaited follow up to his full band, electric album “elctro-magnetic”, with a largely upbeat acoustic disc, “HERE INSIDE”. Thomas takes a classic country sound and infuses it with a rootsy folk feel, making for lovely songs that are both lively and relaxing. The addition of backing vocals from Jeanne O’Neill on several songs adds to the beauty of this album, which comes as no surprise as they often play together as the duo O’Neill & Martin. If you miss singer-songwriter based country folk (like I do), this is the album for you.
You can check out O’Neill & Martin at the next BlowUpRadio.com Free Concert Series show @ Buddie’s Tavern on Saturday March 9th.

The long awaited follow up companion to one of my favorite albums of last year, “morning comes”, by alt-country Canadian band CUFF THE DUKE, is finally available in the US! The songs on “UNION” are a direct response to the songs on “morning comes”. The band refers to this album as their electric album, but while there are certainly new elements added by the electric instruments, they retain the catchy, harmonious alt-country sound that has made me (and many people) fans on first listen. The centerpiece to this new album is the lovely song, “stay”, a timeless sounding love song with beautiful backing vocals by label mate Basia Bulat. The theme of love comes up often on this album, but not in the schmaltzy way you’d hear a love song on pop radio. I really can’t say enough about how excellent this album is! This album should be huge! Get it now and say you heard them before they break big here in the US (they are already are pretty well know in Canada with multiple Juno award nominations).

“The boys are back and they’re looking for trouble”, so chants the DROPKICK MURPHYS on the first line of the first song of their new album, “SIGNED AND SEALED IN BLOOD”. What follows is what the Murphys do best, 42 minutes of Irish punk rock. Much like the new Bad Religion album, most of this album is not really different from previous releases, but buried in the middle were a couple of songs that really stood out. “Alive or dead” has a more Perry Farrell-esque rock sound to it, a left turn I did not expect, and I really liked a lot. “Don’t tear us apart”, while sounding more like a standard Dropkick Murphys song, has more of an 80’s pop-rock vibe to it, making it a possible pop single, and a catchy sing-a-long. Of course pretty much anything they do is a catchy sing-a-long, which may be part of the reason I love them. Listening to the Dropkick Murphys puts a smile on my face and makes me want to dance a jig and sing (note: no one should ever have to bear witness to the horror that is me dancing and singing).
