Lazlo’s Corner

This past Saturday I was lucky to witness the opening night of 'THE OUTLAW ROADSHOW‘ at the Stone Pony Summerstage. I took a bunch of pictures, which are up on BlowUpRadio.com, and Jay Ingstrup wrote up a full review. I thought I would give my quick thoughts here. The evening opened with FILLIGAR, who drove 12 hours from Chicago to play their 30 minute set, and boy did they make the most of their 30 minutes. This fun classic rock sounding band (think southern rock meets garage with a thumping beat that makes you want to move on every song) left those who were smart enough to show up early wanting more when their short set time elapsed. That was followed by FOREIGN FIELDS, who did falsetto ranged, mellow indie-rock in the vein of Bon Iver. After the rock of Filligar, this seemed like a downer, and an odd fit, much like many years ago when I saw Spiritualized play an early afternoon set out in the hot sun during the HORDE Tour. I really like the music (I was listening to their album, “anywhere but where I am“ today and loved it!), but their placement on the tour didn‘t work for me. I would love to see them playing a theater show. The last opening act, GOOD OLD WAR, put on a rollicking set of 3 part harmony, acoustic based, roots rock. Another band whose short 30 minute set (which included a peppy cover of “the banana boat song” aka “day-o”) left me wanting more. Closing out the night was a full set from COUNTING CROWS, who always put on an amazing show. If there is anything I am disappointed in from them is that they usually change set lists night to night, but their choice of songs and order in which they were played was very similar to their show at Roseland Ballroom back in April. But even with a similar set list, they still showed why they are such a great live band.

‘The Outlaw Roadshow’ will be at Williamsburg Park in Brooklyn on 7/17, and Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden on 7/22 (with a different set of opening acts from the Stone Pony show)

Even before reading on his Facebook profile the first name under his influences was Bruce Springsteen, I knew from listening to his album, “ROSES AND BROKEN HEARTS” (out 7/3), that DIEGO ALLESSANDRO sound was in the vein of Bruce’s acoustic based rock. That is not to say Diego is trying to be a clone of the Boss (there are plenty of others here in NJ that are), for while he is clearly influenced by his music, he has his own compelling voice. And a song like, “dust“, which is a blues song, with an effect laden vocal, that has hints of Jon Spencer & Tom Waits to it, shows the possibility of new directions for Diego’s developing sound. I look forward to hearing where he goes on his next album. In the meantime, check out songs from “roses and broken hearts” here:

I do like me some classic country infused rock…none of that Eagles-type stuff, I am talking more like the Byrds, “sweetheart of the rodeo” album. I think JAYMIE GERARD & THE BURGS may also. Their album, “FLAME AND A SEED”, is absolutely wonderful from beginning to end. Unlike her previous solo or duo albums, the addition of a full band backing her adds lovely instrumentation and vocal harmony flourishes, that take her songs to a new level. Some albums are just pure magic, this is one of them.

A few years ago Emily Whitt and Rick Barry started the band NO WINE FOR KITTENS, as a showcase for them to harmonize their vocals together. Much like Swell Season, the combination is powerful, melodious, and beautiful, and you can hear it for yourself on their new six song collection, “NOT READY YET E.P.” While the vocals evoke the beauty of the harmony, the indie pop music gives the songs an intensity that makes the whole package come together.
You can download “not ready yet e.p.” for ‘pay what you want price’ at Bandcamp (yes that means you can download it for free, but try not to be cheap).

And I leave you this week with a live video from Against Me and Joan Jett covering The Replacement's "Androgynous".
