Watched a sad but fascinating documentary, THE HOLLYWOOD COMPLEX,which on the surface is about a hotel where families stay during pilot season when their children are trying to get roles in TV and commercials. Though what the film really seems to be about (to me anyway) is the delusions of grandeur people have. From the families spending five thousand dollars or more a month to stay in California and get photos, acting coaching, etc., to the "former child star" that shows up during the film and continually refers to herself as a star even though the one film that some people would arguably know her from (a remake of Pipi Longstocking) came out in 1988. Even a TV casting person tells a young "ethnic" person that ethnic people don't get leads in TV shows, and that the person should be looking to play a best friend or sidekick to the lead. And I won't even go into the most telling moment of delusion in the film as it would be a major spoiler and has to be seen for yourself to believe.
The Hollywood Complex is currently airing on Showtime

Last week I raved about THE BAND OF HEATHENS, “THE DOUBLE DOWN LIVE IN DENVER VOL. 1 & 2”, at least the audio on the 2 CD/DVD collection. Now through Noisetrade, you can download for free their 2011 album, "Top Hat Crown & The Clapmaster's Son", as well as the audio from volume 1 of “The Double Down Live in Denver”, AND, four bonus live covers of Grateful Dead songs! Go! Now! Download!

The Band Of Heathens have two area shows coming up (none of which are in NJ):
3/30 @ Hiro Ballroom
3/31 @ World Café Live

The Nico Blues return with an amazing new EP, “die happy”. Opening with a mellow atmospheric song, the EP then sways to a catchy mid-tempo indie-rocker, before changing up again to a 90’s Smashing Pumpkins type song only better. The six songs on the Nico Blues’ latest album shows great diversity and dexterity. If I had to pin down this band I would say they were raised on 90’s modern rock, and took some of the best attributes of that era and added their own twist to it. Bravo! Magnificent!

The Nico Blues plays Friday at Asbury Lanes with The Everyman, Thomas Francis Takes His Chances, and Crazy and the Brains (what a lineup!)

While you are on Bandcamp getting The Nico Blues’ new EP, take a moment to download the free new tune from James Dalton, “silent station”. I’ve known Jpat a long time, and he continues to impress with his compelling storytelling style of music.

GARBAGE is also giving away their first single from their forthcoming album, “not your kind of people”. Their new song, “blood for poppies”, is exactly the type of song I hoped they would return with after a long hiatus. It sounds both like the Garbage of yore and yet totally fresh and new. The verses have a classic garbage sound, but the infectious chorus sounds unlike any of their previous stuff. Check out for yourself as they are giving away the song free for this week only.
