Message From Lazlo

Hey Everyone,

I guess you know you had a really great 5th anniversary party when you spend the next few days sick and in bed sleeping LOL! Yes, for those of you wondering where the newsletter was last week I had a bad cold/minor fever that kept me from doing much of anything. The downisde of running the site mostly by myself is that when I'm sick nothing gets done.

But I want to thank everyone who made it out to celebrate BlowUpRadio.com's 5th anniversary. It was nice to see members of some other local bands out at the show helping to build more scene unity, and of course, supporting BlowUpRadio.com.

I do BlowUpRadio.com because it's fun, but it lives and thrives because of the support you guys give.

Which brings me to something I've wanted to talk about for a while, and finally have space to.

This is not about any band in particular, but it is something I encounter pretty regularly. A band will e-mail me asking to play a BlowUpRadio.com show. I am not against people e-mailing me asking to be on one of the shows I do, but there are a few things I need everyone to keep in mind.

1. If you haven't already sent me a CD, do that first. If I have no idea what you sound like you can't possibly expect me to consider doing a show with you.

2. And maybe this is even more important then 1, everyone needs to understand that I do not have a lot of opportunity to do "rock" shows at "rock" clubs. This is because clubs look for numbers and, as you all know, it's not easy to get people out to see local original bands. I've been doing BlowUpRadio.com for 5 years now, and built up an e-mail list of over 1000 people, but the anniversary show the other week only drew about 10% of this list...and that's a great night for a BlowUpRadio.com show. Many shows I am involved with don't do that well.

I would love to do more BlowUpRadio.com rock shows at clubs, but honestly, the support just isn't there for me to set up regular rock shows. Even the Folk You! shows don't often draw the types of numbers clubs like, and are always in danger of being killed by the venues.

There are some people I see coming out to a lot of the BlowUpRadio.com shows, and I am so thankful for those regulars and semi-regulars. Some of these people are musicians, and I'll admit, I'm much more likely to want to work with musicians who really try to come out and support BlowUpRadio.com, then people who just e-mail me asking for a gig.

Other bands have gone even further to help BlowUpRadio.com, by setting up shows and then asking us to be a "sponsor" and me to be the MC for the night. When I can, I am more then happy to work with bands on their shows as a "sponsor" and host.

I truly believe that the more we all band together and try to unify the scene, the more of an audience we can all gain, and the better it will be for everyone.

A couple more things to mention in brief:

This is your last chance to download for free, Alana Q's - The BlowUpRadio.com Session. I will be removing the MP3 tracks from the site this weekend. Click here to download the album now.

Lazlo's Den, the webcast I do every Thursday night at 8pm on Upstage Radio, dedicated to playing good music, both known and unknown, from around the world, doubled it's length from 1 hour to 2 hours as of last week. If you want to hear my tastes in music outside of NJ, tune in and check it out.

That's it for this week folks. Thanks, as always, for your support!

Peace,
Lazlo

Johanna Stahley - 'I'm not perfect'

At a time where fabricated talent seems all too common, the world of music is finally receiving a breath of fresh air with the release of the debut album from Johanna Stahley. The 30 year-old singer/songwriter took a long and interesting road, full of highs and lows, before finding the ability to admit she is human, let go of her personal demons, and scream to the world in a new found freedom, “I’m Not Perfect.”...
