2. MESSAGE FROM LAZLO
Hi everyone. As we draw close to September 11th, the day that obviously changed all our lives, I looked back on what I wrote in my newsletter shortly after that fatefull day
From September 15th, 2001:
It's amazing how your priorities can change in a week. This time last week I was looking forward to going into NYC for the CMJ Music Fest (which was planned to take place this weekend, but was obivously postponed). Now all I am thinking about is how can I help restore our country. My deepest sympathies go out to the victims and their friends and families. In a way we are all victims, because we will never be the same because of this tragedy.
Like many of you, around 9am Tuesday morning I was at work when someone came running into the office saying that a plane hit the World Trade Center. Quickly we turned on a TV and watched with horror as the events of the day transpired. However, in our darkest hour, when a lesser country's citizens would have given up hope, I saw us banding together as a nation.
I saw people lining up to help the victims. People lined up for blocks to donate blood at blood banks. People ran down to ground zero, not to gawk and look at the carnage, but to ask how they could help. I've seen footage of New Yorker's who usually hate the police, cheer them on in their rescue efforts. I've heard stories of taxi drivers that have stopped charging passengers since many of the passengers were volunteers and resuce workers, this was the cabbies way of helping them. In times of sheer desperation, we are our strongest.
Last night I was driving home around 7:30pm and I passed street after street of people outside waving flags and holding candles. This is the America I love. We are all different, but when a crisis hits, we all band together as one.
I am reminded of a passage from the Dr. Seuss classic, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas":
"Three thousand feet up! Up the side of Mount Crumpit,
He rode to the tiptop to dump it!
"Pooh-pooh to the Whos!" he was grinch-ish-ly humming.
"They're finding out now that no Christmas is coming!
"They're just waking up! I know just what they'll do!
"Their mouths will hang open a minute or two
"The all the Whos down in Who-ville will all cry BOO-HOO!"
"That's a noise," grinned the Grinch,
"That I simply must hear!"
So he paused. And the Grinch put a hand to his ear.
And he did hear a sound rising over the snow.
It started in low. Then it started to grow...
But the sound wasn't sad!
Why, this sound sounded merry!
It couldn't be so!
But it WAS merry! VERY!
He stared down at Who-ville!
The Grinch popped his eyes!
Then he shook!
What he saw was a shocking surprise!
Every Who down in Who-ville, the tall and the small,
Was singing! Without any presents at all!
He HADN'T stopped Christmas from coming!
IT CAME!
Somehow or other, it came just the same!
And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling: "How could it be so?
It came without ribbons! It came without tags!
"It came without packages, boxes or bags!"
And he puzzled three hours, `till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before!
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store.
"Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!""
and maybe AMERICA does too!
I really can't think of anything to add to my sentiment from last year. I think it still says exactly the way I feel about this country.
