It's amazing how your priorities can change in a week. This time last week I was looking forward to going into NYC for the CMJ Music Fest (which was planned to take place this weekend, but was obivously postponed). Now all I am thinking about is how can I help restore our country. My deepest sympathies go out to the victims and their friends and families. In a way we are all victims, because we will never be the same because of this tragedy.
Before I make a brief statement on the week that was I just need to say this. No one race, creed, color, religon, etc did this heinous act. This tragedy was the act of some truly evil people who are not indicitive of their culture. Terrorizing others of the same ethnicity would make us terrorists ourselves. We are all angry, but we cannot take this out on innocents. I am sure most of you understood that already, but my friends come from various ethnicities and backgrounds and several of them are afraid in anger people will associate them with the people who carried out the most vicious attack on America I've ever seen.
Like many of you, around 9am Tuesday morning I was at work when someone came running into the office saying that a plane hit the World Trade Center. Quickly we turned on a TV and watched with horror as the events of the day transpired. However, in our darkest hour, when a lesser country's citizens would have given up hope, I saw us banding together as a nation.
I saw people lining up to help the victims. People lined up for blocks to donate blood at blood banks. People ran down to ground zero, not to gawk and look at the carnage, but to ask how they could help. I've seen footage of New Yorker's who usually hate the police, cheer them on in their rescue efforts. I've heard stories of taxi drivers that have stopped charging passengers since many of the passengers were volunteers and resuce workers, this was the cabbies way of helping them. In times of sheer desperation, we are our strongest.
Last night I was driving home around 7:30pm and I passed street after street of people outside waving flags and holding candles. This is the America I love. We are all different, but when a crisis hits, we all band together as one.
I am reminded of a passage from the Dr. Seuss classic, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas":
"BANDING TOGETHER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE"
"THE AFTERMATH..."
"HELP THE BOBFIELDS FIND THEIR GUITAR"
